His owner took him to Illinois, a free state, and he was considered free. Then his owner took him to missouri, Scott willingly went and then sued for his freedom. He didn't win the lawsuit because he was in a slave state. -

On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States. The south did not approve because congress and the Lincoln were Republican and anti-slavery. -
California Withdraws From the Union
On December 20, 1860, California voted to withdraw from the Union. This created a chain reaction. Over the next couple weeks Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all withdrew from the Union. -
