The goal of the abolitionist movement was the immediate emancipation of all slaves and the end of racial discrimination and segregation. Advocating for immediate emancipation distinguished abolitionists fwho sought to restrict slavery to existing areas and prevent its spread further west. -
Dred Scott Decision
The Supreme Court ruling was handed down on March 6, 1857. Chief Justice Taney delivered the opinion of the Court, with each of the Justices filing separate opinions. Dred Scott versus Sandford was a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court held that African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be American citizens.
