    The Union attempted to block the southern states. They attempted to prevent any weapons, goods, and troops, to enter the southern states. The Union thought that if they did this they could have the economy of the Southern states crash so that the north would win the war.

    The Trent Affair was one of the first things to trigger the Civil War. The U.S. navy captured two Confederate representatives that were on a British mail ship called the Trent. America was accused of violating their neutrality with Britain. This caused a crisis between the United States and Great Britain during the Civil War.

    Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was located in Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter is near Charleston, South Carolina. It was run by the South Carolina militia since the Confederate Army didn't exist yet. It lasted about 34 hours and there was a lot of gunfire. Eventually Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered.

    The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War. The battle was fought in Prince William County, Virginia. This was about 30 miles away from Washington, D.C. Over 35,000 troops marched from D.C. to the small river known as Bull Run. Eventually the South won the battle which gave the southerners a lot of confidence and shocked the North.

    The Battle of Shiloh was fought in Tennessee. It was one of the earlier fights during the civil war. The battle started because the Confederate Army launched a surprise attack on the Union. After a decent time of fighting the Confederates couldn't hold their place anymore and the Union won. There were over 23,000 casualties, this shocked both the North and the South,

    The Battle of Antietam took place in Maryland. The Confederates then invaded Maryland which threatened D.C. After fighting for about twelve hours the battle came to an end and the Union won. Since the Union won this allowed Abraham Lincoln to announce the Emancipation Proclamation.

    The Issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation was done by President Abraham Lincoln. This happened during the second year of the civil war. The proclamation declared that all slaves that were brought to or escaped to non-slave states were free.

    The Battle of Fredericksburg took place in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Confederates attack the Union several times. The battle lasted four days. The Confederates ended up winning the battle. This was a huge defeat against the Union army since it was at the start of the Winter.

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was an extremely important battle. It took place in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The battle lasted a week. One of the General's from the Confederate army was awfully wounded. Although their general was severely hurt, they won and it was a huge victory for them.

    The Vicksburg Campaign lasted almost two months and included a series of battles. It was created by the Union to take over an important Confederate city in Mississippi. This was the Union's second attempt to take over Vicksburg. This ultimately gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.

    The Battle of Gettysburg lasted two days. The Confederate army went into Pennsylvania and met the Union. The Confederate army was unsuccessful as many of their soldiers died so they had to leave. Eventually this resulted in a win for the Union.

    The Gettysburg Address was a speech that Abraham Lincoln made where the Battle of Gettysburg was. This was an extremely important speech because Lincoln discussed how there needs to be equality in the country. He also said how it needs to be said in the Declaration of Independence.

    The Overland Campaign was a campaign created by a Commander from the Union. The Campaign was an outline of one of their plans. The plan was to capture the Confederate Capital. The battle was unsuccessful and thousands of soldiers died.

    The Sherman’s March to the Sea November was a march held by the Union. The march was led through Georgia from Atlanta to Savannah. Their ultimate goal was to scare the citizens living in Georgia so that they would support the Union. They didn't want to be violent but they ended up burning down confederate's houses. They also stole Confederate's livestock.

    Lee's Surrender at Appomattox took place after losing a flee to the west. General Lee surrender to General Grant. Although Lee surrendered, his troops didn't. Eventually the Confederate Commander surrendered to Grant.

    The Appomattox Campaign was the last campaign of the Civil War. General Grant attacked General Lee and his army. General Lee and his army were forced westward. Lee and his army were not able to escape Grant and his army so they surrendered.
