    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise was a package of 5 bills passed by the congress.
    These bills were the following:
    1.Texas surrendered New Mexico in exchange that the government would take over the state debt
    2.California became a free state
    3.Popular sovereingnty in new states
    4.Slave trade was banned but slavery not
    5.there came Fugitive Slave Law these bills caused a lot of tension between the north and south.

    After his former slave master sold him to U.S. Army Surgeon Dr. John Emerson Dred Scott was taken to Illinios which was a free state. Mr. Scott Went to court were the judges decided That Dred Scott remained a slave because a slave is just property. So that meant that slavery actually could be used everywhere.

During this time assisting fugitive slaves was illegal under the Fugitive Slave Act. Brown captured several buildings; he hoped that his attack would lead to a slave uprising in the south.
