Compromise of 1850
It consists of five laws that passes in September 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
It created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and it opened new lands for settlement. Settlers in those territories determined whether they would allow slavery through popular sovereignty. -
Bleeding Kansas
Dealt with anti-slavery free-staters and pro-slavery that took place in Kansas. The cause was to find out if Kansas would enter the union as a free state or slave state. -
Lincoln- Douglas Debates
1858- was a series of debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln lost the debate, but it eventually led to his election as President of the U.S. -
The Dred Scott Decision
This was a decision that was to determine if Dred Scott would be free since he lived on free soil. Dred Scott lost the decision because 7/9 justices on the Supreme Court declared no slave could ever be a U.S. citizen. -
Lincoln's Election
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the U.S. for the republican party. He carried all of the free states and none of the slave states. -
Fort Sumter
This was a battle started the American Civil War near Charleston, South Carolina. It was a fortress controlling the entrance of the Charleston Harbor. -
Bull Run
First major battle of the armies in Virginia. A union army fought against the confederate army and by July 22, the union army reached the safety of Washington. -
The Battle of Harpers Ferry
In West Virginia, the battle of harpers ferry started with the light fight. The confederates tried to capture the Maryland Heights, while John Walker captured Louden Heights. The federal garrison surrendered after a confederate artillery bombardment. -
Antietam
The battle of Anietam was the first major battle to take place on Union soil. It took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland and was one of the bloodiest day battles in American history. -
Emancipation Proclamation
this was an executive order by Abraham Lincoln to free the slaves in all regions behind confederate lines. -
Gettysburg and Gettysburg Address
The battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, is known as the wars turning point. The Union defeated attacks by the confederates, which ended Lee’s invasion of the north. The Gettysburg address is a speech given by Abraham Lincoln. He spoke about the equality of humans and the declaration of independence. -
Andersonville Prison
also known as camp Sumter. Confederate officials moved the federal prisoners to a larger area for security and food abundance. Many of the Union soldiers were held here and many of them died. -
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
This was the final engagement of the two armies. It signaled one of the last battles of the Civil War. The confederates surrendered to the Union. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
The assassination was carried out by John Wilkes Booth, as a larger conspiracy to revive the Confederate cause.
