Captain Charles Wilkes captured James Murray Mason and John Slidell from a Brittish ship. Brittan got angry and demanded an apology and the men back. The Union eventually gave them back. -

The Battle of Shiloh
Was faught in Hardin County, TN and was one of the major battles in the Civil War. It involved the Armys of Tennesse, Ohio, and Mississippi. Although the Confederacy succeeded on the first day they were defeated on the second and they were forced to retreat. -
Union captures New Orleans
When Frarragut's fleet made it to New Orleans, the city was suprisingly vulnerable. They finally took the city when General Butler took control from the marines. -
The Battle of Seven Pines
Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's forced headed to Richmond where Gen. Joseph E. Johnson's troops were. The casualties hurt the unions confidence, but the Union and the Army of Potomak won. -
The Battle of Chattanooga
The Battle of Chattanooga was a very small artillery battle in the War. The Confederacy was seperated into many small comands to try and confound Federal opperations. But the CSA's plan failed and the Union won. -
The Battle of Antietam
This battle was faught in Sharpsburg Maryland. It was the first major battle in the American Civil War to have taken place on Union soil. The Union was led by George B. Mclellan while the Confederacy was led by Robert E. Lee. The US defeated the CSA at 4:30 that night. -
The Battle of Chancellorsville
It was fought in spotsylvania county, VA. The victory was won by the Confederate side due to Less audicity and Hookers timid desicion making. -
Siege of Vicksburg
Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant attacked Vicksburg and trapped a Confederat troop under the authority of Lt. Gen John Pemberton. Vicksburg surrendered, it was one of the most "brilliant military campaigns" of the Civil War. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the War. On the first day of the battle Lee sent two corps to assult the Union on the north and the north west sides wich caused the soildiers to retreat to the south side. On the second day the Union army held there lines while being attacked in the left flank. And on the final day of the battle the Confederacy surrender and retreated back to VA. -
West Virginia becomes a state
West Virginia and Virginia were already divided as is. Pioneers and Mountaineers in West Virginia, slave holding aristocrats in Virginia. -
The Battle of Chickamauga
Was located in Catoosa County and Walker County, GA. This battle was a very signifigant Union defeat. It was faught with the second most casulties in the war following the Battle of Gettysburg. The Unions surendered and the CSA's had won. -
The Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address was given by President Abraham Lincoln in dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery in Gettysburg Pennsylvannia. In honor of the thousands of soldiers who had lost there lives during the Battle. -
The Battle of Cold Harbor
The Battle of Cold Harbor was known as Americas bloodiest battles faught during the Civil War. 1,844 Union soldiers were killed and 9,077 were wounded. The Lt. Gen Ulysses S. Grant had written in one of his journals "I have always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever made. ... No advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained." -
The Siege of Petersburg
Petersburg is the site of the railroad for the south, and Grant wanted to stop the transportation of weapons to Richmond. When Grant broke through the confederats retreated. -
Sherman's March to Sea
William T. Sherman, Union general, left the supply line to go through Georgia, to the Atlantic Ocean to show that the Confederat government couldn't protect its people. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Fitzhugh Lee's calvery made a battle line in front of the Appomattox Courthouse. Robert E. Lee and his men came up, they battle and Robert E. Lee surrendered. It was the last battle, of the war, in Virginia. -
Lincoln was assassinated.
At 10:15 PM Lincoln became the first American president to be assassinated. The murderer was John Wilkes Booth who was a famous actor. The president was shot while watching Our American Cousin at Ford Theater In Washington DC. He died the next morning acrossed from the Theater.
