Robert Anderson was sent with a ship called USS Star of the West full of Supplies for Fort Sumter but as he approached the Fort, NE Charelston shot at the ship and Robert Anderson wasn`t able to drop off the supplies. -
The First Battle of Bull Run
The Union troops gathered around Washington D.C. in hope of capturing Manassas, VA, which was an important railroad, but the Confederate troops stood around the creek waiting for Union troops at Bull Run. This was the first battle of the war. The Confederate forces won. -
Battle of Hampton Roads
The Confederate ironclad Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads where she sank The Cumberland. On March 9 the Union ironclad Monitor arrived to do a battle. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but Virginia retired. -
The Battle of Antietam
General Lee, the commander of the Northern Virginia Army, moved to strike Union territory in Maryland. A Confederate messenger dropped a copy of the battle plans, andthey were found by a Union Solider. The Union then learned that General Lee's troops were divided, so General Grant attacked. Antietam was a day long battle at Antietam Creek in Maryland. The battle ended in a tie. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation had an immediate effect on the the war. In addition to saving the Union, freeing the slaves now became an official war aim. The Proclamation also allowed African-Americans to join the Union’s armed forces, and by the end of the war nearly 200,000 would honorably serve. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
Accidentally, Confederate troops discovered The Union calvary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Confederates attacked, setting the way for the largest battle of the war, which lasted three days. The Union Army won the Battle of Gettysburg. -
Siege of Atlanta
General William T. Sherman led the North. General John Bell Hood led the South. They attacked Atlanta, Georgia.The day after the attack, the Union won the siege and occupied Atlanta which boosted the confidence of the North. -
Treaty that Ended the Civil War
General Lee surrendered his troops at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia which signaled the ending of the Civil War. This is what created the emmergence of a more powerful federal government. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
On Good Friday, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who thought he was helping the South by doing this. The result was the opposite. -
Ratification of the 13th Ammendment
The 13th amendment officially ended slavery. This came 8 months after the Civil War ended. When Georgia ratified it on Dec 6, slavery ended in the United States.
