Confederate forces attacked Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. With federal troops almost defeated, reinforcments arrived following the next morning, the Union commanded the field. 13,000 out of 63,000 Union soldiers died. 11,000 out of 40,000 Confederate troops died. -
"Stonewall" Jackson Defeats Union Forces
Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson, commanding forces in the Shenandoah Valley, attacked Union forces in late March forcing them to retreat to the Potomac. As a result the Union forces were rushed to defend Washington DC. -
The Seven Days Battle
The Seven Days battle began on June 26, 1862 and lasted for seven days. Union and Confederate Forces fought a series of battles and on July 2, the Confederates withdrew to Richmond. -
The Battle of Antietam
General Lee, commander of the Northern Virginia Army, moved to strike Union territory in Maryland. A confederate messenger dropped a copy of the battle plans which was found by a Union soldier. The Union learned Lee's plans and the battle ended in a draw. -

Declared that all slaves in areas still in rebellion were, in the eyes of the Federal government, free. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
General Lee led his army for a second invasion of the North, the Gettysburg Campaign. This war resulted in 51,000 casualties, it took Gettysburg years to recover from it's battle scars. -

Shermans victory in Atlanta boosted Lincolns popularity and helped him with the re-election by a wide margin. -
The Fall of the Confederacy
On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. This took place at the home of Wilmer McClean in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia. After his surrender, it pressured the other Confederate armies to surrender also, thus, ending the Civil War. -
The Assassination of President Lincoln
Soon after the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while watching the preformance of, "My American Cousin" at Fords Theatre in Washington DC. He was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth.
