General McDowell was the leader for the Union and for the South Beauregard and Stonewall Jackson were leading. This battle was importanct because the Confederacy won and forced the North to retreat very quickly and the North realized the war was going to be longer than expected. -
Battle of Shiloh
The two leaders for the Yankees were General Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh. The Leader for the North was General Beauregard. The Union won.The importanct of this battle is that the Union won a more strategic battle. -
Fall of New Orleans
For the North Captain David Farragut and for the South there were no leaders because this was a naval battle. The South didn't have a Navy. The Union won and the importance is that this battle completed the North's control over the Misssissipi River. -
Battle of Antietam
General McClellan was leading the North when General Robert E. Lee was leading the South. For this battle there was no victor just another draw/tie. The importance of this battle is that the Union was able to prevent from the war going into northern land -
Battle of Federicksburg
The Union had a new general leading this battle General Ambrose Burnside, and General Lee was still leading the Confederacy. The victor of this battle were the Rebels. The importance of this battle is this is the Souths' second win back to back. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
The Union had yet another new general: General Hooker, the South still had their General Lee. The Confederacy won again and the South was starting to get cocky. The importance of this battle is that a rebel shot Stonewall Jackson who was on the rebel side and a week later Jackson died. "Jackson lost his left arm and i lost my right," -Robert E. Lee. -
Battle of Gettysburg
For the North we had General Meade and for the South we had General Lee and General Pickett. At the end of th battle the Union ended up winning. This battle ended the Confederate hope of getting help from Britain and France. -
Siege of Vicksburg
For the Union we had General Grant and for the Confederacy we had all the people.The Union ended up winning. This battle was yet another major turning point for the war. This siege lasted for 47 days. -
Wilderness Campaign
In the North Grant was leading them and for the South we had Lee. Grant ended up winning this bloody battle in dense forest and critics called him a "Butcher." Lincoln though defended him even though no one else did. The importanct of this battle is that Grant was able to move closer to Richmond. -
Farragut at Mobile Bay
David Farragut led this attack and he's for the North but he was born in the South. He joined the navy when he was 13 years old and he is the highest ranking Union officer. Captain Farragut was able to lead this attack successfuly even though he was very dizzy that day so he was tied to his boat. The importance of this attack was the Union took the Souths' LAST Confederate port. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
Sherman led his march, and his goal was the break the morale of the South. So in other words to break their fighting spirit. Sherman and his men became destoryers; destroying anything the South might find useful. Shermans march starteed November 15, 1864 and ended December 21, 1864. In the end the South's mood turned to desperate. -
Fall of Richmond/Surrender at Appomattox
General Lee and the Confederates withdrew and President Jefferson Davis heard that Lee withdrew and he started to destroy Richmond, Virginia. General Grant was still leading the whole Union army. The importance of this even is that Grant and the Union were able to finish their Anaconda Plan and take over Richmond. So in the end the Yankees won.
