General Sherman and his men led a destructive march through the South. They burned cities and farmland, destroyed supplies, took food, tore up railroads, and freed slaves. The Union wanted to break the morale of the South like this. -
Fall of Richmond/ Surrender at Appomattox
When Jefferson Davis heard the Union was moving toward Richmond he started destroying Richmond, burning documents, and weapons were set on fire. Lee continued to fight but later surrendered. In the town of Appomattox Court House Grant met with Lee to discuss the ending of the Civil War. This was important because it was the end of the long and bloody Civil War.
