Linda Brown was African American and she wanted to attend a white school. However schools were segregated according to color so Brown could not attend. The Court ruled that segregation in public schools was illegal. -

Although the Court began to order schools to disegregate only 3 districts did it. Others adopted gradual disegregation plans. -
Rosa Parks refuses to give up her bus seat.
Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her seat on the bus. The Montgomery Bus Boycott evolved and MLK and other church leaders arranged to give blacks rides. -
Montgomery's Bus Bycott is announced illegal.
The victory brought MLK to become the leader of civil rights. -
Little Rock Nine
The school board in Little Rock Arkansas selected 9 outstanding black students. Although Little Rock was segregated it had a reputation for being moderate. Whites tried to stop the plan. Ernest Green becomes first black student to graduate from Central High School.
Green became the first black student to graduate from high school. He remembers that no one clapped for him but he accomplished what he wanted so he did not care. -

Supreme Court orders the University of Mississippi to accept James Meredith as its first black student.
The Court ruled the University of Mississippi to accept James Meredith as its first black student. Governor Barnett blocked him from attending and deadly riots broke out. Meredith attended class.
