During the 1940's in Georgia, Ellis Arnall helped end the "all white primary". He also changed the voting age to 18. -
Herman Talmadge
Herman Talmadge, son of Eugene Talmadge, was elected the governor of Gerogia for a short period of time but then relected in 1948. He also served in the US Senate in 1956 until his loss in 1980. He had a big impact in Georgia Goverment and Georgia education. -
Benjamin Mays
Benjamin Mays was the head of Atlanta public schools and the president of Mofehouse College. He beleives that segregation was wrong. Marthin Luther King looked up to Benjamin as his mentor. -
Brown v. Board of Education

1956 State Flag
In this year, the GA state flag was chaged to include a confederate battle symbol. This flag was used from 1956 all the way to 2001 until they adapted a new flag in 2003. -
Andrew Young
Andrew was the first African American to be elected to the US House of Representatives since reconstruction happened. He served as an aide to Martin Luther King Jr. He also wanted to bring the Olymipics to Atlanta. -
SNCC
The SNCC, which stands for Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, and Martin Luther King worked hard to get African Americans registered to vote. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter
These 2 people were the first black students to attend the University of Georgia. When they both first showed up at the college many people were confused and angrey. Both of them were very nervous to get out of the car because they were being surounded but they were also excited. -
Albany Movement
The civil rights activites took place in the center of Albany, Georgia. People who lived here supported The Albany Movement which was a bus boycott, but it turned out unseccessful. -
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King was a minister ,origianlly from Atlanta, who created a non-violent way of protesting. Ways he thought change could be gained were boycotts, sit ins, freedom rides, non-violent protests and many others. Civil Rights Act
The civil rights act created new laws that ended segreation in public schools.It also banned employment discrimination which includes the color of your skin, religion, and race. -
Lester Maddox
Lester Maddox was elected the governor of Georgia in 1967. He was very popular with the people of Georgia who supported segregation. -
Maynard Jackson
Maynard Jackson was Atlantas first ever African American Mayor from 1974-1982. He expanded the bus station, MARTA, and also the Hartsfield Airport. For Atlanta, he helped secure the 1996 Olympics.
