  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    Social-During the Civil Rights movement the KKK and other anti-segregation groups spread terror throughout the U.S.
  • African Americans and Women Run for Office

    African Americans and Women Run for Office
    Political- In North Carolina, and many other states, African Americans and women began running for office. They also won.
  • Brown v Board of Education of Topeka

    Brown v Board of Education of Topeka
    Political- An African American girl, Linda Brown, wanted to go to an all white school, but she was denied. The case went all the way to Supreme Court and segregation was ruled unconstitutional.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Economic- Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man on a bus and was arrested. This started the Montgomery Bus Boycott where the African Americans refused to ride the Montgomery Buses. This resulted in a great decrease of income for the Montgomery Buses.
  • Pearsall Plan

    Pearsall Plan
    Economic- Thomas Pearsall devised a plan that if schools did not want to integrate they had to close. This effected the state's economy.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    Social- Nine African American students enrolled at Little Rock High School. The nine were refused access to the school and eventually President Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the students.
  • Greensboro Coffee Party

    Greensboro Coffee Party
    Social- Four African American college students went into a diner in Greensboro. The students sat in an all white section and refused to give up their seats. This led to sit-ins later on.
  • Nashville Sit-Ins

    Nashville Sit-Ins
    Economic- Nashville lunch counters started serving African Americans after many sit-ins and arrests.
  • Birmingham Civil Rights Movement

    Birmingham Civil Rights Movement
    Political- African Americans in Birmingham got together and started organized protests. This led to violence and many African Americans were either hurt or killed.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Political- African Americans held peaceful protests in Washington which included Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964
    Economic- Gave equal job opportunities to African Americans.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    Social- President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act which gave everyone, regardless of race, sex, religion, etc., the right to vote without any restrictions.
  • Martin Luther King Assassination

    Martin Luther King Assassination
    Social- Martin Luther King was assassinated but many groups and organizations still planned to carry out his plan of peaceful protests.
  • Swann vs Mecklenberg

    Swann vs Mecklenberg
    Political- The court case forced schools to integrate and bus student where they were needed to balance the schools.
  • Equal Rights Amendment

    Equal Rights Amendment
    Economic- This amendment allowed everyone to have equal job opportunities.
