    Benjamin Mays
    Longtime president for Moorehouse college in Atlanta. He had Leadership roles in the NAACP and YMCA. He was the mentor of Martin Luther King jr and taught him about non-violence.
  • End of White Primary

    End of White Primary
    The supreme court declares that the white primary is uncosntituional and that balcks should be allowed to vote then too. The whit eprimary dissalowed blacks to vote during the primary, which hardly gave them a voice for who they wanted as nominee. White folks found this as a way to disenfrichise them.
  • Governor's Race

    Governor's Race
    Eugene Talmadge was elected in 1946, but he died prior to taking office. Ellis Arnall claimed the office, and so did Melvin Thompson, Lieutenant Governor time. The state legislature gave Herman Talmadge the job, but the state supreme court stated this decision unconstitutional and said Thompson was the rightful Go governor.Talmadge stepped down after 67 days. However Talmadge later defeated Thompson in a special election
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    schools<Many cases wanting to desegregate schools were brought to the suprme court. Brown v. board of education was named for 5 ases pleading the same thing. After much deliberation the Suprmem court declared that same but spereate was not equl and that schools must become intergrated.
  • 1956 State Flag

    1956 State Flag
    The 1956 flag contained the battle flag for the confederacy. This was passed when the Georgia legislature was pro segrgation and white supremacy. it was used to send the message that georgia only wanted segregation. The flag was changed in 2001 and changed again in 2003.
  • Sibley Comission

    Sibley Comission
    In Atlanta, Georgia Assembly supported resistance to desegregation. Governor Vandiver did not want to make a wrong decsision, so he made the comittee to find out Georgian's Opinion. Sibley was in charge of this comission. Results showed that 60% of Georgian's would rather shut down public schools than intergrate them.

    SNCC
    SNNC( Student Non-Violent Coordinating Comission) was one of the major civil rights organizations of 1960's. The members were moslty high school or college aged. Their focus was non-violent, peaceful change. They are well-known far doing ppeaceful riots and sit-ins. One of their most famous sit-ins is the Albany Movement, which was unsuccesful because everyone was thrown into jail. SNNC learned valuble lessons for the following riots.

    Hamilton Holmes and Charleyne Hunter
    Both were black students who applied to UGA and were denied enctrance because of their race. However both were highly qualified. They took their case to federal court, which demanded they would be allowed to attend. However at their arival there were angry protests and riots in whcih bricks and rocks were being thrown into their homes. Although they were treated badly, both graduated and became succesful.

    Martin Luther King Jr. and March on Washington
    Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist that played a key role in the civil rights movement. He was all about non-violence protests. He lead many non-violent organizatons to protest for civil rights. On August 28, 1963 Marchh on Washington was held and attened by over 200,00 both black and white people. Martin Luther King jr. then gave his famous speech "I have a dream". Sadly he was killed that day. His speech and the march played a factor in the passage of the Civil Rghts Act of 1964.

    This act forbade discrimination on both the basis of gender and race. it was to be put into action when hiring promoting, and firing.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox
    Owner of a restauraunt and later on Governor. When Maddox had restaurant he was a violent racist who would rather shut down his place than desegregate. However he appointed more African Maerican's into office than any other governor before him. As governor he backed significant prison reform and increase funding for the University System of Georgia.
  • Maynard Jackson Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson Mayor of Atlanta
    He was the first and youngest African AMrican Mayor for the City of Atlanta. As mayor he helped expand MARTA and the Hartsfield-Jackson airport is named after partky named after him. he helped bring the Olympics of 1996 to Atlanta.

    Andrew Young's work as a politician, civil rights activist, and businessman has been in responsible for the development of Atlanta's reputation as an international city. He became Atlanta's Mayor and worked with Andrew young.
