He led many organizations and nonviolent protests to fight for desegregation and equality. He gave many moving and inspiring speeches, suh as his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. He became a national symbol of civil rights and equality.

    Benjamin Mays as President of Morehouse College
    Benjamin Mays was a civil rights activist and leader. He was the president of Morehouse College in Atlants, and mentored Martin Luther King Jr., and introduced the ideas of integration and civil rights to him. He was a member of many civil righs organizations such as NAACP and YMCA.

    The end of the White Primary kept disenfranchising blacks, even in th 20th century. The primary eections were segregated, and because many black people would not vote or run for office, black people never got to have a say in which nominees were elcted. Finally, this system was abollished.

He was a avid proponent of segragation, and tried to resist integration in Georgia's public schools.He also became a senator later on.

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Herman Talmadge: Reaction to Brown v. Board of Education Decision This famous case ended segregation in all public schools. The famous Plessy v. Ferguson case was also mentioned in this case, and played an important part in this most controversial case. This case was about how segragation in public schools (in this case, in Topeka, Kansas) violated the Equal Protection Clause in the Constitution.

    The General Assembly added the Confederate Fla to Georgia's state flag as a response to the Brown v.s. Board of Education case. This became a symbol of segragation and white supremacy in Georgia.
  • Sibley Commission

    Sibley Commission
    Governor Vandiver Jr. wanted to gather data that showed Gerogia's residents' thoughts about desegregation in Georgia's public schools. A committe asked Georgia redisnts if they would rather have the public schools shut down, or if they would have integrated public schools. A shocking 60% of Georgia residents said that they would rather have the public schools shut down.

    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee SNCC was a group of social and civil rights activists that was mostly made up of people 18-24 year old. SNCC used noviolent protests, such as sit-ins to make their voice heard. They organized and participated in the Albany Movement and the Atlanta Project.

    Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes admitted to UGA
    Hunter and Holmes became the first African Americans to be admitted into the University of Georgia. Holmesd went on to also become the first African American admitted to Emory University School of Medicine, and Hunter became an award-winning journalist, and was recognized on television and in print.

    Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement was one of the most important mass movements during the Civil Rights Era. More than a thousand African Americans were jailed due to participation in the Albany Movement. This movement was a failiure but it was instrumental in succeeding in Birmigham, Alabama, and this movement taught a lot to Martin Luther King Jr.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington The March on Washington was a tremendous gathering with 250,000 participants, united at Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech here.

    Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Act made discrimination based on race, color of skin, religion, gender, or nationality illegal.

    Lester Maddox as Governor
    Maddox was a white supremacist, who was an opponent to desegragation. After a long struggle to get elected, Maddoxwas elected as governor. During his time as governor, Maddox reformed prisons and icreased funding for many Georgia universities. Surprsingly, he appointed the largest number of African Americans to governement positions.

    Andrew Young became the first African American to be elected from Georgia to serve in Congress, after Reconsruction. Jimmy Carter chose him as a United Nations Ambassador. He focused on human rights throughout his life, and he helped to make Atlanta an international and diverse city.

    Maynard Jackson as Mayor
    Jackson became the first black mayor of a Southern city that is a major hub. He was instrumental into bringing the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta. He helped to bring more business to firms owned by minorities, and was extremely influential in city politics.
