    This was ordered by President Truman and stated that there would be equal treatment towards all races/ethnicities in the military.
    This event is significant because it was a breakthrough in race relations in the military. This ended racial segregation in the military

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Oliver Brown filed a lawsuit against the Board of Education in Kansas after his daughter was denied access into an all white elementary school. He was challengng Plessy v. Fergusons ruling of "separate but equal", the court ruled in Brown's favor.
    This court case is significant because for the first time it proved that separate but equal was not actually equal.

  • Emmett Till

    Emmett Till
    A 14 year old African American boy from Chicago went to go visit his relatives in the deep south of Mississippi. He was severely beaten to death after making a remark to a white woman in a store. This event is significant because it showed African Americans up North (where segregation was not as severe) that the discrimination in the South still had an effect on them.

  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    This boycott lasted from December 5, 1995 to December 12, 1956. About half a million African Americans refrained from riding the bus, this cost the city lots of money. The city eventually adopted integration on December 21.

  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    A group of 9 African American students enrolled in an all white high school, serving as a test for Brown v. Board of Education. The students were met with lots of opposition, so eventually president Eisenhower sent military troops to escort the nine students into the school.
    This event was significant because it showed that the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education would remain true. It also showed the precedence of federal law over state laws.

  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    African Americans gathered in Washington D.C, in front of Lincoln Memorial to advocate the continuous challenges that they face involving inequality. Martin Luther King also gave his "I Have A Dream" speech while 250,000 people listened. This event was significant it caused the passage of the Civil Rights BIll on 1964. The bill banned segregation in public facilities, prohibited discrimination of jobs and established Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. “March on Washington.” Google Search
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination
    The day after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech at Memphis Temple Church in Tennessee he was struck by a bullet which ended up killing him. This event was significant because it created uproar in cities around the country, 100 cities began rioting. A week later on April 11 the Fair Housing Act was signed which outlawed discrimination among buying/selling houses.
