Brown vs. Board of Education
This was a court case that made segregation in schools illegal. The Brown family sued the Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas. The case went to the Supreme Court and they decided segregation in schools was unconstitutional. -
Montgomery Buys Boycott
It was a civil rights protest in which African Americans refused to ride city buses in Montgomery to protest segregated seating. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually ordered Montgomery to integrate its bus system. -
Sit-in Campaign
Most places would not serve blacks. They protested this by sitting at the counter until they were acknowledged and served food. -
Albany Movement
SNCC and the community of Albany began to protest segregationists in the city. The plan was ruined because the police were waiting for them when they came and arrested them all. -
Freedom Rides
Done by people called "Freedom Riders" who were groups of white and African American civil rights activists. They went on bus trips through the south to protest segregated bus terminals. The groups were arrested by police. -
March on Washington
Lead by MLK, 250,00 civil rights activists went to the Washington to protest. This is where Dr. King gave his "I have a dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
It ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination from race, color, religion, sex, or nationality. -
Freedom Summer
It was a 1964 voter registration drive sponsored by civil rights organizations. Aimed at increasing black voter registration in Mississippi. The Ku Klux Klan and police carried out violent attacks against the activists. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
It was signed into law my Lyndon B. Johnson. The purpose of it was to allow African Americans to overcome barriers that kept them from voting. -
1968
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated for his leadership in the Civil Rights Movement.
