    Herman Talmadge

    Herman Talmadge was the son of Eugene Talmadge and served as governor of Georgia for a short time in 1947 and again from 1948 to 1954. Then in 1956, Talmadge went to the US Senate and served as Senator until his defeat by Republican Mack Mattingly in 1980.

    Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox wasa racist segregationist that was Georgia's govenor from 1967 to 1971.Maddox did progress a few racial matters. He appointed more blacks into congress than all other governors combined and he increased funding for the University System of Georgia.His term didhave controversies such as him overeacting at MLK's funeral procession by having a overwhelming police force. Lester dieddecently recent on June 25, 2003.

    Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Junior was the most promenant civil rights leader in the 1950s and 60 and is the most well known civil rights activist. He was born in Atlanta in the great state of Georgia and throught the 50s and 60s, he staged many marches and protests to fight for desegregation and civil rights. Sadly, King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 shortly before the Poor People's March to Washington. Even after his death, the march went on. http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/file/13685

    Andrew Young

    Andrew young is known for his work as a politician, human rights activist, and businessman which has been responsible for the growth of Atlanta's reputation. He was a civil rights activist and worked with Dr. King in Selma. AfterKing,s death, Young joinedthe House of Representatives in 1972. Heisstill alive today.

    In Novemebr 1946, Eugene Talmadge won the election for governor but then died one month later. Ellis Arnall, the former governor thought that since there was no one to replace he stayed governor. Herman Talmadge thought he should be governor because he had received write-in votes during the ’46 election. M. E.     Sible Commission

    The Sibley Commission was created by governor Ernest Vandiver to research the opinions of Georgia residents on what they thought of integration of Georgia schools. The governor chose John Sibley to be the head of the commission and the commission found data such as 60% of all people prefered complete segregation. In January18, 1961, the governor was forced to sign a bill desegregating schools bya federal judge.

    SNCC
    The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or the NSCC, played a major role in the american civil rights movement in the 1960s. The SNCC was created when students of Shaw University campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, met at a sit-in movement and established the SNCC. SNCC coordinated youth-led nonviolent campaigns regarding segregation and other sorts of racism. The SNCC played a predominant role in sit-ins, Freedom Rides, and the 1963 March on Washington.

    Albany Movement

    It was the first mass movement in the modern civil rights era to have as its goal the desegregation of an entire community, and it resulted in the jailing of more than 1,000 African Americans in Albany and surrounding counties. MLK was alsso involved in the movement as he got arrested with hundreds of other people. He left Albany 8 months later admitting he had failed his goals in Albany. King learned strategies that he wouyld later use in Birmingham.

  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    On August 28, 1963, over 200,000 Americans gathered in Washington D.C. for a political rally known as the March on Washington. Organized by many civil rights groups and MLK, the event was designed to show the political and social struggles African Americans continued to face across the US. The march included Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream," speech which rallied for a desegregated nation.
