He was the 75th governor Georgia. He was elected because of his antiblack policies, but when he was in office, he changed his ideals. He hired many blacks and inmproved labor for them. He later served as lt. governor under Jimmy Carter. He originally cooked and owned a white only restaurant in Atlanta. -

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most significant leaders in the civil rights movement, organizing many protests and giving many speeches, such as his "I have a dream speech" and his march on Selma. Andrew Young
Andrew Young joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1961. The SCLC is the Atlanta Civil Rights group led by MLK. Eventually, he became one of the most important people in the SCLC. He organized voting registrations in Albany and protests in Selma. He was with MLK when MLK was assainated. He was later voted into the House of Representatives. His focus has been to solve econmic and racism issues in Georgia. He currently teaches in GSU. -

Maynard Jackson
He was the mayor of Atlanta and the first black mayor of a major Southern city. As mayor he helped small businesses and expanded the airport (which is why it was renamed after him). He also helped with the 1996 olympics. -

Three Governors Controversy
Eugene Talmadge, who had been voted into office, died, and people couldn't decide if lieutenant governor Melvin Thompson, previous governor Ellis Arnall, or secret write-in candidate Herman Talmadge, son of Eugene, should hold office. It was so bad that Herman Talmadge changed the locks in the governor's office so no one could get in but him. Brown v Board of Education
This case was taken all the way to the supreme court. It was about Linda Brown, a small girl who had to walk seven blocks to get to her black only school when there was a white one only one block away. The Supreme Court overruled Plessy v Ferguson and said separate but equal was illegal and that all schools had to integrate. Georgia's State Flag (1956)
This flag which lasted almost a century, was very controversial because it contained the Confederate battle flag in it. It was approved in 1956 with no press involvment, but once people found out, there was an outrage. -

The Sibley Comission's job was to gather information and create polls to determine if it would be better to close schools or integrate them. -
Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee formed
This group was primarily made up of black teenagers who protested for rights. Many adults chose not to protest in fear of losing their jobs, but because these kids had nothing to lose, they would protest instead of their parents. It was formed with the help of the SCLC. -
UGA's integration
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter are the first two black students in UGA. They arrive to school everyday with guards to protect them from their racist classmates. It was a series of protests to end desgregation. So many people were part of it, that even MLK himself joined the movement, although he later called it a failure. But he learned from his mistakes and then went to Birmingham. -

Civil Rights Act of 1964
This law essentially prohibited segregation and unequal voting applications. It was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act really helped the nation grow stronger. By deeming all people as equals, it allowed blacks a chance to voice their opinions and play roles in politics. For example, Thurgood Marshall became the first black Supreme Court Justice. Before, blacks didn't have a say in government. -
