Georgia's last segregationalist governor. Ran a restaurant that prohibited integration; would drive out blacks with axes. -
3 Governor's Controversy
A period in Georgia's history where there were 3 governors. Herman Talmage, the write-in governor; Melvin Thompson the Lieutenant Governor that was supposed to take over based on the new costitution; and Ellis Arnall who was the previous governor who refused to step down from his position until the situation got resolved. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
Court case where the Browns sued the Topeka board of education for not admitting their daughter due to her race. Case resulted in the ruling of the Supreme Court that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. -
1956 State Falg
Geogia's state falg during the 1950's- 2000's which included the Confederate battle flag and was found offensive to african americans. Change was attempt to resist laws against discrimination. -

Student Nonviolent Corrdinating Committee is an organization founded by MLK that played a central role in the CIvil Rights Movement in the 1960's. -

Organization formed by the General Assembly to study the public's opinion on integration of schools. -
Integration of UGA (Hunter and Holmes)
First african americans to be admitted to the University of Georgia were Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter. They were intially denied due to their race but won admittance when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of them. -
Albany Movement
A movement in Albany, Georgia where local citizens and out of state activists, including MLK, protested against the segaration laws and prejudice. -
March on Washington
A march in Washington for jobs, freedom, and rights. MLK presented a speech during this march to racial discrimination. -

Act passed by the Congress that prohibited sates from establishing voting qualifications based on race or with the purpose of preventing certain people from voting. -
Maynard Jackson as Mayor
Date the first black mayor of Atlanta was elected into office. -

Civil rights activists who worked close to MLK. Key in bringing the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta (also the date for this event).
