  • 1955 August Emmet Till

    In August, Emmet Till, an African American teen, was beaten and murdered by two white police officers
    while visiting Mississippi. The white men were acquitted by an all-white jury.
  • 1955 December Rosa Parks

    In December, Rosa Parks, an African American bus passenger, was arrested for disobeying a Montgomery, Alabama, bus law. The law required colored people to give up their seat when a white person wished to sit in their seats or in the same row.
  • 1957 Civil Rights Leaders founded SCLC

    1957 Civil Rights Leaders founded SCLC
    Civil rights leaders, led by king, founded the southern Christian Leadership conference (SCLC). They promoted equal rights through non-violent protests, and community development programs. Other important civil rights groups included Student non-violent coordinating committee (SNCC), the congress of racial equality (CORE), and national association of colored people (NAACP).
