Brown vs. Board of Education
After the the Plessy vs. Ferguson case, Brown won against the Board of Education. They ruled that separte but equal was NOT okay. This decision affected more than 12 million students in only 21 states. After one year that this got passes, 500 districts in the US were desegregated. Although this helped many districts, the South highly disagreed to desegregate schools and refused to do so. They claimed to desegregate with all deliberate speed. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
On December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks, a black woman, was aressted for not giving up her seat to a white male on the bus. This started the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lead this boycott along with many others. Thousands of blacks participated by refusing to ride the bus for 381 days. This was a huge part of the Civil Rights Movement. -
Freedom Riders
The Freedom Riders was a group of 6 white people and 7 black people that decided to test the Surpreme Courts decision on banning segregation. They took the bus through many towns to see how the government and others reated. Unfortunately, this ride for this specific group of people ended on May 4th when not only in Birmingham they were beat but also in Anniston, Alabama. There was roughly 200 angry white people that attacked the bus by following and slashing the tires and ending it with a bomb. -
Birmingham Marches.
In Birmingham, Alabama on May 2nd, MLK and 1000 others marched for their freedom . Bull Connor who was the Police Commissioner reserved jail cells across the state for all of the 959 people that were arrested that day. The very next day, May 3rd,there was another march that ended badly. Police in riot gear used tear gas, clubs, fire hoses and dogs to attack anyone who was marching. After this Birmingham officials meet MLK's demands to end segregation. -
I Have A Dream Speech
On August 28th, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech in Washington D.C. to 250,000 people about his dream for America and the steps they need to take and where he wants America to be. Two weeks after this speech, the Birmingham church was bombed kiling four young girls. Two months later, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. -
MLK Assassination
1968 was a huge turning point. On April 4th, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and this devastated the whole country, mostly blacks though. The picture shown is just few seconds before he was shot.
