Brown v. Board of Education
The Supreme Court, in a landmark case for civil rights taking place in Topeka, Kansas, rules unanimously that "seperate but equal" is unconstitutional. The new ruling overturns their previous decision in Plessy v. Ferguson. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks, a member of the NAACP, refused to give her seat up to a white man who was boarding the bus. Parks was sitting in the appropriate section but, due to overflow, she was asked to leave. Parks was arrested for breaking city laws. -
Freedom Rides
The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) organizes Freedom Rides in the South to protest against segregated buses on the interstate. In general, the rides stopped in November when the Interstate Commerce Commission integrated interstate buses. -
Thurgood Marshall
Thurgood Marshall becomes the first African American justice on the Supreme Court. -
Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm becomes the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress, serving from 1968 to 1983.
