  • The start of freedom rides

    A group formed called the CORE and Fellowship of Reconciliation who decided to begin to test the law of segregated buses crossing state lines.
  • CORE boycotts unsuccessful

    The CORE's efforts to make the issue of segregation in public transportation more widely know failed due to lack of media coverage. Their boycotts and protests were not enough at the level they were doing to catch the attention of the federal government.
  • Students testing the waters

    Two students decided to test the law that banned segregation in buses that crossed state lines by taking a bus home from college in Tennessee while refusing to get up from their seats in the front of the bus.
  • Freedom Riders

    A group of white and African American protestors took 2 white only buses' south to protest segregation.
  • Violence during freedom rides

    There was a lot of violence met with the travel during the freedom rides when they reached South Carolina and Alabama. This started to grab the attention in the media that eventually reached to the federal level.
  • The ban on segregation

    The ban on segregation for all facilities that run interstate buses was officially in effect in November of 1961.
