Civil Rights Era (1940-1970)

  • End of the White Primary in Georgia

    This was first used to prohibit African Americans to vote.Then the King V. Chapman Supreme Court case made the white primary unconstitutional.
  • The 1946 Governor's Race

    t was the beginning for the African Americans because they could vote for a Governer. Then the Three Governer's Crisis was beginning as well on the same year. This crisis happened because before taking the oath to the office Eugine Talmage died. So when he died no one knew what would happen if the govenor-elect dies before taking office.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    his case was about making schools seperate but equal, and that made the schools segregated. So was it okay for the kids to be segregated into different schools because their skn color? It wasn't okay, it was unconstitutional. It was unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment.
  • Founding of the SNCC

    Founded in April 1960 by young African Americans that had become leaders from the sit-in protest. The SNCC stands for "Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committe". What those students did is that they challenged segregated the bus system in Albany
  • The Albany Movement

    The SNCC wanted the young people to protest against the segregation policies in Albany. Throughout this Albany's African Americans rose above. Many African Americans were jailed for trying to protest. Then MLK got involved and help keep the momentum going. In the end MLK's perspective of the Albany Movement is that it was unsuccessful.
  • Admission of Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter into UGA

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were the first African Americans to attend UGA. Then the state funds were cut-off to white institution that admitted a African American student. That rumor then caused tension, and Hamilton and Charlayne were being treated badly.
  • March on Washington

    The way African Americans promte Civil Right and ecomic equality. Participants marched down to the Lincoln Monument to listen to speeches, songs, and prayers. Also for MLK's inspirational speech "I Have a Dream"
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Public Law passed by Congress in 1964. The Acrt forbade discrimination on the basis of sex as well as race in hiring, promoting, and firing. It also enforced the right to vote.
  • Election of Maynard Jackson

    He is an African American that takes office. He was elected mayor of Atlanta. He was the first African American mayor of a major southern city.
