Civil Rights Era (1940-1970)

  • End of white primary in Georgia

    The end of the white primary in Georgia was a very successful moment in history. This ended all of the segregation and the fact that whites were treated above average. Whites and blacks and every other race were now treated equal.
  • the 1946 governor's race

    In 1946, the famous governor's race occured. The 1946 governor's race was when different governor's ran against eachother. The thing that makes this so special was because African Americans were able to vote.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    The Brown vs. Board of education court case ruling was when a U.S. Supreme Court case declared that the seperate- but-equal schools were unconstitutional. This case was very important to our nation and will go down in history. This case was a success.
  • the admission of Hamilton Holmes & Charlayne Hunter into UGA

    The admission of these two people was a very interesting time. The University of Georgia accepted two african americans for the first time. This was a very inspiring moment and embarked lots more people to apply.
  • The Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement occured in 1961. This movemet began to desegregate Albany in Dougherty County. In this area, most blacks depended on whites for livelihood.
  • March on Washington

    The March on Washington was when almost a quarter of a million americans, black and white, marched on Washington. This was televised live to an audience of millions. Over three thousand people, including Martin Luther King jr., were arrested.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This event was federal legislation that refused federal funds to any school system that didn't end segregation. The legislation made racial discrimination in public places. For example, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, etc.
  • Election of Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson was a Morehouse graduate just like Martin Luther King Junior. He first one the vice mayor's position in Atlanta in 1969. He served as mayor in Atlanta for two terms and was later given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981.
