    13 colonies, were founded by the "Pilgrim Fathers", through the Mayflower contract. These were divided into New England, Middle and Southern colonies. New England, specialized in fishing activities and Industries as well as the Middle colonies. Whereas, in the south there were Plantations of sugar and cotton.In these territory, people could not tolerate the sun so they were in desperate need of slaves.

    In 1807 the Congress banned the importation of slaves, as in 1793 there was a desperate need of slaves so their number increased to more than four million slaves in the United States.Therefore, some congressmen from the South joined with the North to put an end to slave trade. However, this was accepted in 1808, and the children of the enslaved people became bondsman to sustain its population in the South.

    After the election of Abraham Lincoln,1860, the 13th Amendment is formally adopted, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”However, after his inauguration four more Southern states joined the Confederacy, even though, the majority of the South were not on board. That's why the Ku Klux Klan was created, an organization against blacks in the South
  • The 14th Amendment is passed

    African American became full citizens. Forbidding States to deny any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" . Although it covered some of the same ground as the Civil Rights Act of 1866, the amendment ensured that the act could not be overturned by the Supreme Court .
  • Segregation laws

    Because of Jim Crow, the Supreme Court ruled that these state segregation laws were inherent as long as both facilities were equal. In reality, the services and facilities made available for African-Americans were either vastly inferior or nonexistent.

    The first civil rights organization not focused on a single group of people was founded. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) seeks to defend the civil liberties of citizens by the Constitution, its amendments and various laws and acts. At times, the issues of the ACLU may seem contradictory as It supported the NAACP's work to end racial discrimination but also defended the right of the KKK to express and promote their ideas.
