  • 1946 Governor's Race (Eugene Talmadge Gets Sworn In)

    Three Governors Controversy
    When Eugene Talmadge died in office, no one knew who the next governor was. Eugene's supporters said that his son, Herman should become the next governor even though Herman had not won the election. Most politicians believed that the lieutenant governor, Melvin Thompson was the correct leader, but the Previous governor, Ellis Arnall, refused to leave office.
  • Herman Talmadge is elected for Two Month Term

    Herman talmadge served a two-month term in 1947 due to the "Three Governor Crisis". When Eugene Talmadge (his father) died in office, his supporters believed that Herman was the next to take the governors chair. The non-supporters of Herman believed that the lieutenant governor was the next to take the chair. (I also created this event to showcase all of Herman's life.)
  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    Oliver Brown, an African American man, tried to get his daughter into a segregated white school. He was denied and filed a class action lawsuit against the Topeka, Kansas school board. Cheif Justice Earl Warren spoke the unanimous descision of the judges and said "no state shall make or enforce any law which shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." This statement meant that no student should be denied access to education in their school district.
  • Georgia State Flag of 1956

    1956 State Flag of Georgia White Georgians were upset over the victory of Brown in the Brown vs. Board of Education case. They voted to create a new flag for Georgia. The new flag was designed and created on July 1, 1956. As a tactic to scare African Americans, the flag used the old Confederate design, a flag they had feared centuries ago.

  • Sibley Commission is Formed

    Sibley Commission The Sibley commission was formed in 1960 to help Governor Ernest Vandiver Jr. decide on the integration of public schools.
  • Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter Arrive on UGA Campus

    Hamilton HolmesCharlayne Hunter-GaultHolmes and Hunter were the first two black students allowed on the University of Georgia campus.On January 11th, a mob of students followed Holmes and Hunter to their dorms and began smashing windows and shouting profanity. That night the campus staff escorted Holmes and Hunter back to their homes in Atlanta. The school reportedly suspended the two students for their "safety".
  • Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement
    The Albany Movement was the first of mass movements. Its goal was to try and desegregate an entire community. Martin Luther King Jr. and hundreds of other black protestors marched to Albany. In December of 1961, when hundreds of the protestors had been arrested, Martin Luther King Jr. admitted that they had not completed any of the movements goals.

  • March on Washington

    The March on Washington
    On August 28, 1963 over 200,000 blacks and whites gathered in Washington, D.C for a day filled with "songs and joyous prayer" (History.com). The movewment wasalso known as "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom". (Use link for the rest of information).
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Civil Rights Act of 1964This Act was signed into law in 1964 by Lyndon B. Johnson and was supposed to outlaw "discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin" undere the 14th amendment.

  • Martin Luther King Jr is Assassinated

    He was shot at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was killed at 7:05 at night on Thursday, April 4, 1968. James Earl Ray was arrested on June 8, 1968 in London at the Heathrow Airport. King's family belived that the assassination was a government conspiracy.

  • Maynard Jackson as Mayor of Atlanta

    Maynard Jackson
    Maynard Jackson was elected in 1973 and was the first black mayor to serve for a major southern city. He served eight consecutive years and returned for another term in 1990.
