  • Stonewall Inn Raid

    Police raid a gay bar in Greenwich Village known as the Stonewall Inn. Hundreds took to the streets in protest. Riots ensued.
  • Homosexuals Allowed to Serve in Public Employment

    The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) successfull lobbied the US Civil Service Commission to allow gay people to serve in public employment.
  • Human Rights Campaign Founded

    Currently has over 700,000 members. It seeks passage of an employment nondiscrimination act to prevent US citizens from being fired from their jobs for being gay.
  • Lefislative Lawyering Program

    Founded to work for progressive legislation at both the federal and state levels.
  • Boy Scouts of America v. Dale

    The US Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts could remove James Dale from their organization because they believed that homosexual conduct was inconsistent with its mission.
  • Massachusetts Protected the Rights of Homosexuals to Marry

    The Massachusetts Supreme Court held that same-sex couples have a state constitutional right to marry. A proposed constitutional amendment would negate that right.
  • California Gay Marriage Ruling Overturned

    The California Supreme Court held that gay marriage was legal in California only to have the ruling overturned by an initiative that defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
