    Oliver Brown and Linda Brown were involved. This took place at Topeka, Kansas. The NAACP had combined five cases into one to go to the supermarket. The court had decided 9-0. Separate but equal was wrong. Linda never went to a desegrated school. Many schools closed until 1964.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    They were accused of whistling at a white women. Three days later Roy Bryant and others kidnapped eye detached, ear cut off, barbwire wrapped around his neck. He was weighted down by seventy five pound cotton gin fan, then thrown into water.
  • Southern Christian Leadership Conference

    Southern Christian Leadership Conference
    On Jan 10-11, 1957. MLK and sixty pastors were involved. This took place in Atlanta, Georgia. Meetings for Black Church pastors to coordinate event for black people. MLK was elected the 1st president. This group used a nonviolent-strategy. This group also registered blacks to vote, opposed Vietnam war and provide better jobs for blacks.
  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    NAACP and nine black students were involved. This took place in Little Rock, Arkansas. Nine students wanted to go to the white school. The governor of Arkansas call out the National Guard to stop them. President Eisenhower calls in 1,200 military men to escort these students from home to class. 1959 all schools finally integrated.

    There were 4 college students involved. This took place in Greensboro, North Carolina. Go to Wodworth’s to buy items. Then go sit at the lunch counter. They are refused service and told to leave, but they stayed. Day after day they came back and did the same thing. The amount of students grew over the days to 1,000.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    There were 436 individuals in 60 separate freedom rides. Thus started in Washington D.C. go to Deep South to desegrate bus stations, diner and hotels. A diverse group volunteers from 39 states, most were college students. Arrived in Anniston, Alabama blocked by KKK. Trees slashed, free bombed, busses burned, town after town.

    March on Washington
    In Washington D.C. 250,000 people marched Washington D.C. It was peaceful and respectful protest for jobs and freedom. MLK gave his “I have a dream” speech. MLK was the last speech of the day.

    Lyndon B Johnson (LBJ) was involved. This happened Washington D.C. It enabled the federal government to prevent racial discrimination and segregation based on race, color, religion, or natural origin in private businesses or public facilities.
  • Assassination of Malcom X

    Assassination of Malcom X
    At the age of 39. Malcom Little was involved. At Audubon Ballroom New York. Civil Rights leader who was part of the Nation of Islam. He wanted black people to believe in themselves and start their own businesses. He was shot 21 times. Thomas Hagan convicted of killing.
  • Selma to Montgomery Marches (Bloody Sunday)

    Selma to Montgomery Marches (Bloody Sunday)
    There were 600 marches, John Lewis. In Selma Alabama. Blacks had marched wanting to walk 54 miles to Montgomery to register to vote. At the Edmond bridge troopers brutally beat them.

    LBJ was involved. This took place in Washington D.C. Enabling the right to vote of African Americans and discrimination in voting. Now a federal matter not state.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King

    Assassination of Martin Luther King
    MLK was involved. This happened in Lorraine Motel, Memphis, Tennessee. Striking stations workers protest in Memphis. Went nail to the motel. Shot lower right side of his face, with Remington Rifle. James Early Ray sentenced to 99 years. His death marks the end of the civil rights movement.
