Benjamen Mays
Click this link after reading Benjamin Moays was the president of Morehouse college. He was elected the president in 1933. He was signifignant in helping form the NAACP and the YMCA. He was a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. and was a speaker to help end civil problems befor the modern civil rights era. He was a distinct minister, speaker, educater, scholor and activist to help improve things for the lives of blacks. -

Brown v Board of Education
The Brown v BOard of education was a series of 5 cases. But hte one we focus on is the main which is the one concening Oliver Brown and his daughter. This case was a challenge to the schookl system provided for blacks. The Supremem Court had uled earlier that things "may be seperate but equal". However a family said that it was not equal when their daughter went to school at at lesser place with worse facilities, education, and promise then white schools. -

1956 State Flag
In 1955 a group of men proposed changing the flag with a red and white stripe pattern covering 2/3 of it with a square section of the conferderete flag. At first this was only met by a couple people, but when the verdict for Board v BOE came through it sailed through. People were upset about this, but not until later when they started paying attention to the state flag and thought it was not appropriate. In 2003 a new flag was adopted and is the current one we have. -

SNCC
SNCC stands for Student Non-violent Coordinating Commitee. It was created to help create non-violent protests to help people get their point acrss about rights. They organized sit-ins, boycotts, and carpools. They helped with the Motgomery bus boycott, and were in the March on Washington. This program was created to help blacks help in ways that would not hurt anyone.

Sibley Commision
The Sibley Commison was a decison made by Governer Earnest Vandiver about intergrating schools. A commitee was created to decide wether public schools would be integrated or closed down. He madce the committee go out and gather opinions about this topic wanting to make a good decision that was popular with the people. John SIbley headed the commision. The result was that schools were intergrated. However the actual intergration of schools only started in the 1980's. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter were 2 black students that were denied entrance to UGA because of their race. They were the first African-Americans to ever go to UGA. They were both denied several times and finally with the help of the NAACP took the decisions to court and won thier case. They were required to be admitted. -
Albany Movement
The Albany Movement began in the dummer og 1961 and ended in the fall of 1962. This was the first big, united movement in the south to desegragate something. It was organized by SNCC and the NAACP and was a movement to help fight the laws. Their were sit-ins, and boycotts, and ohter peaceful protests. Matrin Luther King Jr. even got drawn into the movement. King was inaffective in helping anything drastic change but definitly helped bring awarness to the cause of the people. -
Andrew Young
ANdrew Young was a speaker, a pastor, a civil rights activist, and a buisnessman. He was a friend and trusted aid of MLK and was with him when he was assasinated. After King was killed Young stepped into the spotlight to help fill the roll as best he could. He was the first African-American to be elected into Congress from GA. He helped improve human rights and make things better for all people. -
Herman Talmadge
Herman Talmadge was the son of Eugene Talmadge. He was part of the three governor contrevoersy and claimed to be the governor by default. He served as governor only for a brief time twice. He was a white suprmeces and used the county unit systemn to get more votes. He was a senator for 4 terms in the US Senate. He tried once agian for governor but ultimatly failed because of personal problems that ruined his political reputation. -
March on Washington
The March in Washiungton was a peaceful protest that occured on August 28th in 1963. A group of 200,000 Americans walked to the Washington Monument to listen to others and share their own opinion on thge segregation of the US. Martin LutherKing Jr. shared his famous "I have a dream" speech here. The event was planed by SNCC and the NAACP.

Civil RIghts Act
The civil rights act was the law that was officialy signed into the constitution saying that one could not descriminate agianst someone based on age, sex,or race. This helped blacks get jobs and a better education. This also made all the Jim Crow laws null and void.

Lester Maddox
Lester Maddox was a politician and buisnessman. HE did not believe in integration and was a strongly against integration. He ran for mayour once and was unsucessful and decided to run again. In 1968 he was elected as a governor. He was suprisingly progressive as a governor and faced racial issues head on. He elected many blacks and was a progressive govorner.
At the end of his life Lester expredded his regrets to the way he acted twords blacks. He died in 2003. -
Maynard Jackson
Maynard Jackson wwas the first African American mayor of Georgia. He served for 8 years. He has part of the Alanto named after him. He shares the other half with Hartsfield
