Rosa Parks
NAACP member Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the middle of the bus. In response to her arrest the Montgomery black community started a bus boycott. -
Little Rock Nine
Nine black students are blocked from entering the school on the orders of Governor Orval Faubus. President Eisenhower had to send Federal Troops and the National Gaurd to intervine because of rising hostility from racist mobs. -
James Meredith
James Meredith becomes the first black student at the University of Mississippi. Violence and riots surrounding the incident caused President JFK to send 5,000 federal troops. -
" I Have A Dream "
Around 200,000 people join the March on Washington. Congregating at the Lincoln Memorial, attendees listen to Martin Luther King's famous " I Have a Dream " speech. -
Malcom X
Black nationalist and founder of the Orginization of Afro-Ameriocan Unity, Malcom X, is shot to death. It is believed that assailants were members of the Black Muslim Faith.
