    Brown vs Board of Education
    Before Brown vs Board of Education blacks and whites were legally required to attend to different schools. After Brown vs Board of Education took place blacks were allowed by law to attend to white schools. This ended the equal but separated system that was in place prior to Brown vs Board of Education.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmett Till was just a 14 year old boy at the time of his assassination. The reasoning behind this murder is that he allegedly whistled at a white woman. After whistling J.W. William and Roy Bryant kid napped him and brutally murdered him, and basically got away with it.
  • Rosa parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    A mass protest that Rosa parks started. This protest lasted 13 months. Eventually the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregation on buses was unconstitutional.
  • Founding of southern christian leadership

    Founding of southern christian leadership
    Their goal was to achieve change through nonviolent ways. They wanted to desegregate Cities like Albany Georgia, Birmingham, Alabama, and St. Augustine, Florida. They focused on schools.

    Group of black students get integrated into a white school. This was a challenge because many of the students were racist. They had to have a military escort.
  • SNCC & Freedom Summer

    SNCC & Freedom Summer
    Many blacks were afraid to vote. The main propose of this plan was to get blacks to vote. They also organized sit-ins
  • Greensboro Sit-ins

    Greensboro Sit-ins
    African males were denied service. This then lead the black men to not give up their seats. Eventually this lead to sit-ins.
  • Freedom Riders

    Freedom Riders
    Group of African Americans participating in freedom rides. They would ride through the South of America. They would do this to protest against the segregation in buses.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    Quarter of a million people marched up to Washington D.C.. They were there for economic justice. They were also there to put an end to segregation in the work space.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    Bans discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, and sex. The also eliminates discrimination in the work space. You can no longer give someone a raise based on their skin color.
  • Selma to Montgomery March

    Selma to Montgomery March
    This march took place so that blacks could be assured that they could exersice the right to vote. They wanted to make sure that racist systems wouldn't be in place. Some of these practices basically made it impossible for blacks to vote.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    Aimed to remove barriers at state level that prevented blacks from voting. Some of these would be test. Some other barriers might've been taxes.
