Brown vs Board of Education
In the supreme court case Brown vs Board it is decided that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. This decision overruled the decision of Plessy vs Ferguson that decided "seperate but equal is ok," and led to the widespread desegregation of schools. -
Rosa Parks
On december 1st 1955 Rosa Parks, a member of the NAACP, sits outside of the colored section on the bus and does not get up when told to move. This leads to her arrest which starts the famous bus boycott which lasts more than a year untill busses are desegregated on December 21st 1956. -
Little Rock Nine
Even after Brown vs Board some schools refused to desegregate like Little Rock Highschool. Nine black students enrolled in Little Rock in 1957 and were denied entry by the governer, Orval Faubus, after president Eisenhower finds out he sends National Guard troops to escort and guard these nine black students throughout school. -
"I Have a Dream" Speech
on August 28, 1963 about 200,000 people march on Washington arriving at the Lincoln Memorial and listen an Martin Luther King gives his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. -
Civil Rights Act
On July 2nd,1964, President Johnson sighns the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The largerst civil rights legislation since the start of civil rights. The Civil Rights Act prohibited all kinds of discrimination based on race, color, religionm or nationality and provided the federal government with the power to enforce desegregation.
