Benjamin Mays
Biography of Benjamin Mays
Benjamin mays played a huge part in the civil rights movement as a teacher, a preacher, and a dean. He became the president of Morehouse college in Atlanta in 1940 and upon his later years he became the president of the board of education from 1970 to 1981. -
1946 Governor's Race/End of white primay
During this time period three men fought to gain the office of governor of Georgia. Eugene Talmage died before taking oath inot office which sprung a epidimic. Ellis arnall(the previous governor) believed hes should still be governor considering there was no one to replace him. M.E. Thompson beleived he should be governor becuase the constitution states the luetinent governor should replace the governor if he ever got sick or died. Herman Talmadge thought he should be governor over popular vote. -
Herman Talmadge
Served as governor of Georgia for a short period of time in 1947 and again in 1948 to 1954. He was apart of the three governor contoversy and took office in senate from 1956 to 1980. -
Brown v. Board of Education
On May 17, 1954 the United States supreme court ruled segregation unconstitutional. This decision overruled the Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896. -
1956 State Flag
In 1956 John Sammons Bell debatedd to change the Georgia state from the confederate battle flag to red and white bars. Along with bell governor Jefferson Davis, and Willis Harden agreed with the idea to change the flag. May 8, 2003 the legislative finally agreed to change the flag. -
Sibley Commision
In 1960 Governor Ernest Vandiver Jr., was to decide whether to desegregate schools or close them. He knew this decission would make him or break him as a governor. He directed the general on schools and appointed John Sibley to lead it. They came to be known as the Sibley Commision. Sibley recommended that the state accept the federal decision to desegregate the schools despite the commission's findings. In January of 1961, Governor Vandiver introduced a bill that accepted the Sibley Commission -
SNCC
The SNCC stands for "Student Nonviolent Coordinating Comitee," and their sole purpose was to peacfully protest against racial injustices in the south. They participated in many movements such as the Albany Movement (a protest to desegregate a whole communtiy, putting more than 1,000 African Americans in jail including Martin Luther King Jr.). -

Andrew Young
Biography
Andrew worked with many civil rights figures and groups such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the church-centered, Atlanta-based civil rights organization led by Martin Luther King Jr. Later in his career he was elected into the House of Representatives and became the first African American man to serve in congress since reconstruction (John W. Menard). -

Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King biography Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge inspiration and leader during the civil rights movement. An Atlanta native Martin went on to create the civil rights act in 1964, which gave economic and social equality for African Americans and voting act in 1965. He has many high honors incuding a Nobel Peace Prize, and John Dewey award. on april 1968 he was assasinated. -
Lester Maddox
Biography
Maddox was a man apposing the civil rights movement and after a turn of events he somehow became governor. There was much controversy of his term in office, but suprisingly he remained a popular governor.He created such populist ideas as "Little People's Day," when average citizens could line up to meet with the governor twice a month at the Governor's Mansion. -
Maynard Jackson
BiographyElected mayor of Atlanta in 1973, Maynard Jackson was the first African American to serve as mayor of a major southern city. As mayor, he createdon several huge public-works projects in Atlanta such as the Hartsfeild Jackson international airport, named after him for his hard work and service as mayor, and MARTA ( Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority)
