Archduke of Franz Ferdinand is shot
Franz Ferdinand traveled to Sarajevo to inspect the imperial armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Serbians where angry because Ferdinand wanted to expand his territory onto the Serbian land. Ferdinand also looked at them as “pigs” and “scoundrels” but opposed annexation because he didn’t want to make the political situation worse. -

Sinking of the Lusitania
Germany claimed the attack was due to to the Lusitania being an enemy ship and carrying military weapons. They warned the captain that there would be a possible attack which he ignored and sailed right into. -

National Defense Act
It revised the organization if the army and tried to maintain the US’s neutrality of the war. It increased the size of the regular army and built up what is known as the US Army Reserve. It also made the National Guard stronger and more responsive as a reserve force. -

Germany renews unrestricted warfare
The U.S. entered the war. The reason that they agreed to restricted warfare was because they wanted to keep the U.S. out of the war but when we joined the war Germany decided to use their advantage of unrestricted warfare. -

The U.S breaks diplomatic relations with Germany
They broke it off because the Germans reinstituted its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. Germans also promised not to attack passenger ships but when that promise was later broken in 1917, we decided to break off our diplomatic relations. -

A liberty loan is when the government borrows money from the general population. Liberty loans helped pay for the war and allow everyone to help with the war efforts. If one bought a liberty loan, as time went on, they would be worth more, so they could get interest from it. -

Selective Service Act
The act allowed the president to draft soldiers for the war. The act was put in place because the men who had volunteered for the war were growing tired and unable to perform their best.
All the men that could be drafted had to be ages 21-30 according to the act and they also had to be registered. -

They were supposed to figure out what would work out when it came to the production of war material and they had to handle the money as well. The Lever Food and Fuel Control Act allowed the president to regulate the price, production, transportation, and allocated fees and allocation of feeds, food, fuel, beverages, and distilled spirits for the remainder of the War. It allowed the president to nationalize certain private factories, and requisition storage facilities for military supplies. -

War Revenue Act
It increased income taxes to help raise more money towards the war. The lowest income tax of 1% was raised to 2% which then raised the highest income tax to become 15%. Even though only about 5% of the population had to pay income tax, the Act helped raise a lot of money for the war. -

Second Liberty loan
Yes, they used propaganda to sell bonds, especially Woodrow Wilson. Free advertising space was secured for American publications to promote campaigns aimed at selling war bonds, recruiting new soldiers, stimulating patriotism and reinforcing the message that the nation was involved in a great crusade against the enemy. -

Railroads are Nationalized
Woodrow Wilson used the Federal Possession and Control Act to nationalize railroads. This meant that taxes had to be raised as well as operation costs. Also a last minute bill was passed in 1915 that stated the workers had to work an 8 hour day. After people still decided to leave for war Wilson decided that nationalism would be the answer. The railroad was divided into three separate divisions, North, South, and East. New railroad cars were built and traveling was made much easier. -

Germans begin massive offense on the western front
They decided to strike now because Russia was out of the war which allowed the Germans to focus on France and England. The wanted to strike before the U.S. army arrived so they could negotiate for peace. The attack came as a surprise for the Allies which was what Germany wanted. -

Battle of Belleau Wood
The U.S. forces stopped the German advance, and on June 6 Pershing ordered a counteroffensive to drive the Germans out of Belleau Wood. Then, they attacked German divisions that led to 1,000 casualties. Adventially, they won the war losing 100,000 soldiers. -
