  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Election of Abraham Lincoln
    Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States in 1860. President Lincoln was running an antislavery campaign. Lincoln wanted to end slavery.
  • Secession of the Southern states

    Secession of the Southern states
    The election of Abraham Lincoln caused the southern states to secede. Abraham Lincoln was going to take away the slaves in the United States. The South needed their slaves to work in the cotton plantations. Jefferson Davis was elected the president of the Confederacy.
  • Civil War

    Civil War
    The secession of the southern states and then the creation of the Confederacy led to the beginning of the Civil War. The Civil War was a 4 year long war between the Union and the Confederacy. The Civil War spanned from 1861-1865.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This proclamation was to get rid of slaves in the south. This would only happen if the southern states did not rejoin the Union by the beginning of the next year.
  • Freedmen's Bureau

    The U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, popularly known as the Freedmen’s Bureau, was established in 1865 by Congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War (1861-65). Some 4 million slaves gained their freedom as a result of the Union victory in the war, which left many communities in ruins and destroyed the South’s plantation-based economy. Provided food.
  • Reconstruction

    Rebuilding of the south. This was caused by the destruction of the Civil War. Also this destruction was caused by the south fighting a defensive war. Jan.1 1863 to Mar. 31 1877.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was watching a play during the time of his assassination. This was in the Petersen House in Washington D.C. Lincoln Killer was John Wilkes. Andrew Johnson would now be president.
  • 13th Amendment

    Stated that slavery was to be abolished. This could only happen if the amendment was ratified. This amendment was a way to formally get rid of slavery.
  • 14th Amendment

    Everyone in the U.S. should have equal rights. No one would be allowed to deny someone rights. Even the newly freed African Americans get equal rights just like anyone else.
  • Radical Reconstruction

    Radical republicans believed that the north should not rebuild the south. The south was separated into five military districts. The new law required southern states to ratify the 14th amendment.
  • 1st African American to be Elected to Congress during Reconstruction

    Representative Joseph Rainey and Senator Hiram Revels were the first African Americans to be elected to Congress. Elected to congress from the south being freed slaves. These men were the beginning of a long line of African American men to be elected in to Congress.
  • 15th Amendment

    Granted African Men the right to vote. This right could not be denied. This was the amendment that helped a lot of freed African Americans the most.
  • Sharecropping

    Landowners allowed tenants to rent their land. The tenants were supposed to give some of the crop money to the land owner.Tenants were supposed to use the land for only crops.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1875

    Pressured against discrimination in the states. The original bill was to get rid of racial discrimination. That bill was changed to make it more acceptable.
