Confrontation with Teton Sioux
Demand one of the expedition/s boats as a toll to travel farther upriver. Significant: At this point their expedition could have ended because they were almost killed by native americans but was saved by Chief Black Buffalo. -
Toussaint Charbonneau and Sacagawea Assigned as Interpreter
A French Canadian fur trapper and his wife Sacagawea are hired as interpreters. Significance: Charbonneau and Sacagawea are siad to have been a huge help to speaking with indian natives throughout the expedition. -
Fort Mandan Completed
Fort Mandan is completed and the expedition is paused for the winter. Significance: The fort was important to be done because if they had no shelter they could possibly freeze to death and the expedition would end. -
The Explorers Send Items Back to Jefferson
Lewis and Clark send a keelboat and approx. a dozen men back downriver, with maps, reports, Indian artifacts and other scientific specimens for Jefferson while the rest head west. Significance: The reason why they went on the expedition was so they could discover new things so the items they sent back to Jefferson were vital. -
Killed First Grizzly Bear
Lewis and another hunter kill a large grizzly bear, which has never been described for science. Significance: New discoveryin science, no one has recorded a description of a grizzly bear. -
Shipment sent from Fort Mandan arrives in the East and is delivered to Jefferson
Instead of finding the Pacific Ocean, Lewis finds snow covered mountains that run for many miles
Significance-The rough terrain makes Lewis and Clark's journey a lot longer than expected -
Lewis discovers a village of Shoshones
The Shoshone chief turned out to be Sacagawea's brother and they were given horses and named the place Camp Fortunate.
Significance- The explorers were given the supplies that they needed to carry on -
Move to South Side of Columbia River
By majority vote the expedition decides to cross to the south side of the Columbia River to build winter quarters. Significance: If they move to the other side of the river and make winter quarters, they could possibly freeze to death. -
President Jefferson Welcomes Ntive American Chiefs
President Jefferson welcomes a delegation of Missouri, Oto, Arikara, and Yankton Sioux chiefs who had met with Lewis and Clark more than a year earlier. Significance: By doing this the americans possibly made friendlier relationships with the native tribes. -
Fort Clatsoop
Fort Clatsop is presented to Clatsop Indian. Significance: This is the point of the expedition where Lewis and Clark begin the journey home. -
St.Louis
Lewis and Clark reach St. Louis. Significance: This was am important time of the expedition because now St. Louis is a popular city. -
Lewis and Clark are Heros
Lewis and Clark return to Washington D.C., they recieve double pay and 320 acres of land as their reward. Significance: These men made many amazing discoveries and helped the U.S. start to become a bigger and greater nation.
