    Eastern Orthodox church

    Jesus Christ is the founder according to sacred tradition. The Great Schism split the main faction of Christianity into two divisions, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. It split because of a complex mix of religious disagreements and political conflicts.

    Lutheran Church

    C. F. W. Walther founded the church. Lutheran Church split from the Roman Catholics. The reason they split was because of Martin Luther pinning his 95 Theses on the door of his Catholic church, denouncing the Catholic sale of indulgences — pardons for sins — and questioning papal authority.

    Church of England/ Anglican

    King Henry VIII left the Roman Catholic Church in 1534 after the pope refused to grant him an annulment, which led to the founding of the Anglican Church.
  • Baptist

    John Smyth led the first congregation; Thomas Helwys travelled back to England the founded the first Baptist church there in 1612. The Baptists separated from the Church of England because they believed church membership should be voluntary and that only believers should be baptized.

    John Calvin of Switzerland and John Knox of Scotland founded the church. They broke off from the Church of England in 1811 the reason for this is because the Presbyterians were opposed to the hierarchy and religious teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Uniting church

    On June 22, 1977, the majority of Methodist Church of Australasia congregations, almost two-thirds of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, and nearly all of the Congregational Union of Australia churches combined under the Basis of Union to form the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA).
