    New Leader Mao Zedong
    In 1949, after the rain Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Zedong came into power over the Peoples Republic of China. Mao had been the leader on the Chinese communist party for the past 28 years. After WWII a civil war broke out between Mao's communist party and Chiang kai-shek’s nationalist party. Mao defeated the nationalist and became the new leader. Chiang fled to Taiwan.

    Korean War Intervention
    United Nation forces and Republic of Korea forces were beginning their advance on the North Koreans and were most likely going to end the war. Then the Communist Chinese forces intervened and badly hurt the American forces and most of the ROK forces. Through many battle of great Marine combat the Chinese were pushed back. China's involvement in the war was very costly and was a major blow to Mao.

    The new leader of the Peoples Republic of China, Mao Zedong, declared his plan of a new economy for his growing country. he wanted to massively increase the economy and increase industrial production. Instead of this the plan failed and led to famine and million of deaths. Mao was losing support fast.

    In 1966 Chinas communist leader Mao Zedong launched the “ Cultural Revolution” to reassure his authority over the Chinese government. Believing that Mou was taking China in the the wrong direction. The cultural revolution continued until Mao’s death in 1976.

    In 1976 China's leader, Mao Zedong, died of natural causes. At the time of his death there were over 800 million citizens in the country. By 1981 Deng Xiaoping was the new leader of China. Deng began policies to increase industry and the economy. He evan allowed some free enterprise.

    June 5, 1989 President George W Bush accused China of “violating human rights” after the incident the US imposed sanctions on china that included suspending high level exchanges between the two countries and stopping the sale of all military equipment and weapons to China.     Before 1992 the USSR and China had had unfriendly relation, because of some disagreements. But in 1991 the USSR fell and Russia became an independent nation. Friendly relation began to grow when China signed a deal worth USD1.8 billion. The deal was for Russian weapons and technology. Russia and China also made a deal to keep relations happy and not to fight over who would be the major controller of Asia. Russia also agreed to aid China in the Building of their first nuclear plant.

    December 11, 1999 The US government arrested Wen Ho Lee, a Chinese American scientist who was accused of leaking nuclear information to China. Eventually Dr. Lee was completely exonerated. The incident adversely affects China-US relations.

    The international Olympic committee had awarded the games to Beijing on July 13, 2001, despite a big dissent. Critics said “China’s record of human rights abuses should have excluded it from consideration. But all the Olympic officials wanted to give China a chance to change, while all of the world watched them. So China was selected to host the Olympics over Toronto by two votes.
