The Day I Was Born
My name is Shu Ling. I was born in China, and I am an only child. I was only six when my family immigrated to America. Life was hard for me in China. There wasn't much my parents could offer me when i was a child, we were very poor. My parents hoped to take better care of me when we moved to America, and they sure did! I am writing this to tell others about my life, and the lives of other chinease immigrants -
Leaving Home
I was six when my parents decided to immigrate to America. I was sad to leave my friends, and family that I lived with in my small vilage in china. But my parents knew it would be a better life here in America, and they were right. It took us 22 days to travel across the Pacific Ocean. It was a very long trip. I was only six when we left, so I didn't fully understand why we were leaving. But I knew we had to. -
Angel Island
My parents were worried about not passing the tests, because many immigrants were sent back to china. But luckily we made it. We were inspected for disease by men in uniforms. It was scary for me because I was so young. Once we passed all the tests and inspections, we were officially americans. And it felt great. -
califronia gold rush
My dad became a Gold Miner. He was very good at what he did. It was a very hard thing to do, but my dad always go through a long day of mining. He helped support our family, without him we would be living the way we did in china. -
Hired To Work On The Transcontinetal Railroad
When I was 21, I was hired to work on the transcontinetal railroad. It was a very hard job. I worked long days, and was always in danger of being hurt. On the job, I lost may friends, due to explosions. It was very sad. But it helped me pay for the things i needed. So it was worth it. -
