Opium War (CHINA)
The Opium War was between China and Britan. China had asked Britain to stop selling opium in their country as it had caused the opium epidemic. But Britain refused, and this resulted in the Opium War. The war mostly was taken overseas, and China was left with a devastating defeat. -
Treaty of Nanjing (CHINA)
After the Opium War, China and Britain decided to sign a treaty. This resulted in China handing over the island of Hong Kong. Eventually, more treaties would be signed with the U.S. which gave foreign citizens extra rights and were not subject to following the Chinese law. -

Taiping Rebellion (CHINA)
The Taiping Rebellion was a large army against the government, with over one million people in it. It managed to gain large pieces of land. But with constant disagreements in the army itself and outside forces, the army was eventually brought down. At least 20 million died in this rebellion. -
Commodore Perry arrives in Japan (JAPAN)
Many westerners had attempted to try and get Japan to trade with their country. Japan continuously refused until Commodore Perry from the US arrived. With four, large battleships, he threatened that unless Japan agreed to trade with the US, he would arrive in an even larger ship. Reluctantly, Japan agreed. -

The Crimean War was mainly based between the Russians and Ottomans, even though other countries were in the fight. The war was around control over the Black Sea, and with the help of the French and British, the Ottomans won the war. -
Treaty of Kanagawa (JAPAN)
After Commodore Perry finally got Japan to settle on trade, the US and Japan drafted up a treaty between each other. Japan allowed the US two ports to use. This would eventually allow for more foreign countries to enter and start trading with Japan. -

Sepoy Mutiny (OTHER)
The Sepoy Mutiny was about the Sepoy Army's rebellion. The Sepoy Army was an army for Britain. After a rumor went down that the English had dipped the gun cartilages in beef and pork fat, the soliders refused to fight. This caused a mass rebeliion and shook the East Indian Company's hold of India. -
Meiji Restoration (JAPAN)
Japan's new Emporer had decided it was best for Japan to enter the age of modernization. By using techniques that worked for other countries, he was able to create a successful country. This era would last for 45 years. -
Suez Canal (OTHER)
The Suez Canal was built by the Egyptians but strained a $450 million dollar debt on them. The Britsh forced the country to allow them to occupy the land so that they could oversee the financial control. -
Berlin Conference (OTHER)
The Berlin Conference was the meeting between 14 countries to divide up Africa's territory. Not a single African country was invited, with no say in it at all. -

Sino-Japenese War (JAPAN)
Both China and Japan wanted control over Korea's trade, so they decided to sign a treaty that would make sure neither side went to war on Korea. But China broke this promise. As a result, Japan wen to the war on Korea's side and completely defeated China. -
Battle of Adwa (OTHER)
The Battle of Adwa was a fight between Ethiopia and Italy. Ethiopia won, and showed the world it's power. -
Open Door Policy (CHINA)
The Open Door Policy in China allowed for open ports and trading. This meant that anyone could trade with the country. It would protect trading rights and China from imperialism. -
Boxer Rebellion (CHINA)
The Boxer Rebellion was made up of peasants and workers who resented foreigners and their extra rights. They marched to Beijing, chanting. This rebellion shows China's nationalism, as well as the effect of other countries on the citizens. -

Russo-Japanese War (JAPAN)
After Japan's win against China in the Sino-Japanese War, it was imminently considered much more powerful. After going to war with Russia, it won again. A treaty between the two countries was drafted up by the US. -
China Becomes Constitutional Monarchy (CHINA)
In 1905, the Chinese government sent different groups of people to land in other countries and learn about them. When they came back, it was suggested that a constitutional monarchy should come into play. The change towards that started in 1908 and ended in 1917.
