    Communist Control of China
    In 1949, Mao Zedong led a revolution through China to overthrow the current government. Mao became the leader of the country and implemented most of the policies that the soviets had. Under communism, all of the personally owned farms were joined into a few large governmentally controlled farms. The industry and free market were gone and people were no longer free.

    Now that China was communist, the Soviet Union wanted to become their allies. This bond made the two largest communist countries in the world allies, making it almost impossible to win a war with them. The U.S. thought this was a threat to the fabric of the capitalistic society and were very angry.

    The Korean war was started in 1950 because of the need to contain communism. The north of Korea was socialist, and the south was democratic. The north went on a offensive to almost take over the entire south, but the U.S. intervened and they stopped the push. The south and the U.S. pushed the north army back over the line of demarcation, but the chinese helped the north in the war to force the U.S. army back over the line, then we pushed back to the original line of demarcation that was there b

    2nd Taiwan Crisis
    The Republic of China wanted to gain control of Taiwan, a small island outside of china. The chinese military fired shells onto the cities of Matsu and Quemony to try and gain control of the island. This offensive stopped when the U.S. intervened and threatened china.

    Grat Leap Forward
    Mao Zedong put in a five year plan to get china’s economy moving, by setting up communes. The people of these communes gave up all of possessions and got them redistributed throughout the commune. The figures for steel, coal, chemicals, timber, cement etc all showed huge rises though the figures started at in 1958 were low. Grain and cotton production also showed major increases in production. Most of the people of china did not like this because they could not live their own lives.

    After Stalin died in 1953, Mao thought that he was the supreme leader of the communist world, but in 1959, Khrushchev held a summit with president eisenhower, but mao didn’t like that. Mao was offended by these actions he felt Khrushchev was being too accommodating to Western demands. This made the tensions run very high with china and the soviets.     Richard Nixon thought that the world would be better if capitalism and communism economies could work together. The two leaders agreed to expand cultural contacts between their two nations. Nixon also established plans for a permanent U.S. trade mission in China. The U.S. had become first interested in having political and economic ties with China in the 19th century. This advanced the relationships with the soviet world and the western world, and continued detente.

    The idea that an open door with trade to the whole world would make their economy stronger. This contradicted with the idea of communism because this idea beckoned free market and trade with outside world. This made the china economy alot stronger and eventually one of the best economies in the world.
