People's Republic of China is Founded
China's Communist party defeated the Nationalist party after twenty years of war. Mao Zedong officialy declares the founding of the People's Republic of China. The Nationalists retreated to set up the government of Taiwan. -
China takes over Tibet
Tibet is taken over by the People's Republic of China, as 30,000 Chinese soldiers invade Tibet. Indian and British delegates manage to convince the UN General Assembly not to discuss the issue. -

Lin Biao dies
Lin plotted a coup against Mao Zedong but was caught and fled from the country, dying on the plane crash of his escape. -
China becomes a member of the UN Security Council
The People's Republic of China gains its seat in the United Nation Security Council, replacing the Republic of China (Taiwan). -
Tangshan Earthquake Hits China
A major earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, hits Tangshan China with a major aftershock 15 hours later. Official death tolls reached 242,769 people. Effects of earthquake could be even be seen in Beijing. -
Mao Zedong Dies
Mao Zedong dies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and breathing problems due to smoking. After his death, Mao's wife and a group of the Chinese Communist Party officials, nicknamed "The Gang of four," fight for power but are eventually arrested.
