  • 206 BCE

    Han Dynasty

    Han Dynasty
    The Han dynasty ruled China for 500 years. It created an organized government with a strong centralized rule and expanded China's borders.
  • 1368

    Ming Dynasty

    Ming Dynasty
    Zhu Yuanzhang led a peasant uprising against the Mongols and with gunpowder weapons, the uprising managed to take Bejing from Mongol control. Zhu took the power and established the Ming dynasty.
  • Qing Dynasty

    Qing Dynasty
    Rebels invaded Bejing and overthrew the last Ming emperor to establish a new dynasty called Qing which means pure. The Manchus were seen as foreigners to the Chinese people and their rule was met with heavy resistance but they eventually got China under their control and started a dynasty which would last hundreds of years.
  • Isolation and decline

    Isolation and decline
    With its growing population, China began to shortages and this led to rebellions which caused the dynasty to falter. China rejected new technologies including military technology and this made them vulnerable to attack. It was dominated by western powers now.
  • European influence

    European influence
    China had a weak military and could not resist the European powers from influencing them. China maintained political independence but became a part of Great Britain's informal empire meaning a nation that relies on a different industrialized nation.
  • China Civil War

    Sun Yat-sen restarted the nationalist political party in China to oppose the military warlords in Bejing that were recognized as China's government. This started a Nationalist vs Communist civil war that tore through China in 1927.
  • Communism

    Communism
    The communist Mao Zedong created the People's Republic of China in 1949 and quickly made China a communist superpower. He discouraged religion and gave land to the pheasants while trying to increase industrial outputs. With aid from the Soviet Union Mao took control of China and anyone that was considered an enemy was sent to a labor camp or executed. He tried to launch a program called the Great Leap Forward but it failed and millions of people starved. He tried to rid China of its old ways.
  • Modern Day China

    Modern Day China
    Chinese students held demonstrations to try and get a more democratic government but tanks were sent in and thousands were arrested or killed. China is still communist and faces many challenges with its growing population of over 1.4 billion people. They have the second-largest economy and are coming up with new technologies to help out the people.
