  • Feb 12, 1541

    Santiago is founded

    Santiago, the capital of Chile, was founded by a Spanish Conquistador named Pedro de Valdivia February 12, 1541.
  • Conquered by France

    In 1807, Chile lost nearly all of its economic political power. Led by Napoleon Bonaparte, France successfully conquered Spain/
  • Battle of Racagua

    Chile was reconquered from France by Spanish troops in the Battle of Racagua.
  • The Vadican acknowledges Chile's independence

  • War of the Pacific

    In 1879, Chile went to war with Bolivia and Peru. This war is known as War of the Pacific. Chile won, resulting in the expansion of the country to the north by about one third.
  • Civil war breaks out between the president and congress

    A civil war erupted between the president and congress over constitutional dispute. This eventually resulted in a congressional win.
  • Treaty of Peace and Friendship

    The Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed between Chile and Bolivia after conflicts about the Bolivia- Chile border.
  • Women obtain voting rights

    In 1949, women were finally able to vote in presidential and parliamentary elections in Chile. The first presidential election women were able to vote in was the 1952 election of Carlos Ibanez de Campo.
  • General Augusto Pinochet's Coup

    General Augusto Pinochet ruled for 17 years after overthrowing the Chilean president at the time, Salvador Allende. His coup is known as one of the bloodiest in 20th century Latin American history as his dictatorship left more than 3,000 people dead and missing.
  • Chile escapes Pinochet's dictatorship

    Pinochet was not accepted as a new mandate by the Chilean people, which allowed democracy to be re established in 1990. This ended with Patricio Aylwin winning the election.
  • Mount Hudson eruption

    The 1991 eruption of Mount Hudson was one of the largest in 20th century history. In nearby areas, the air was filled with ash and other emissions. About 30-40 percent of the livestock on farms within 45 km of the eruption were killed.
  • Pinochet's arrest

    In 1998, Augusto Pinochet was arrested under the order of Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish judge. Because of his rule, Chile has suffered economically, resulting in years of unemployment and inflation.
  • First female president

    The first female president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, was elected in 2006.
  • Sebastian Pinera is Elected

    President Sebastian Pinera was elected in 2018 and remains in office today where he continues to better Chile’s economy.
