Girls Books in the 1800s
Girls books of Home and health. Girls books developed more slowly as a genre. Family stories prevailed and the books were mostly about the good main character. This archetypal pattern in children's literature still carries on today. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Anna Quindlen is a great example of a book for girls in children literature. It was published in 1813 ,following the witty manners of a women and considered to be one of the most popular novels of all time. -
Anna Maria Hall
Anna maria hall was born in dublin, but left ireland at the age of 15. Her home country was the main inspiration of her successful books such as Skectches of Irish Character ( 1829), Lights and shadows of irish character (1838), and the whiteboy (1845). She wrote multiple stories for children and from 1828 to 1837 she edited the 'Juvenile Forget Me Not', and annual published in london. She specializes in the childrens literatue genre and was very well known and successful throughout her carreer. -
Illustrators in the 1800s
From the beginning years of publishing until the 19th century, woodcuts were used to illustrate kid's books. Then in the 1800s the printing technology changed allowing a wider variety in the styles of printing. A few of popular, talented illustrators emerged and changed the look of children's literature. -
Poetry
In 1807 poetry was first introduced with being filled with nonsense, rhyme and rhythm. This delighted children and reflected the authors ability to kids. Later on it the volumes of poetry related to everyday and thought of a child. -
Charles Dickens
was born February 7 1812
wrote the popular novels "Oliver Twist" and "A Christmas Carol" which were both made into popular movies. Aswell many of Dickens novels were related to social realism, focusing on mechanisms of social control that direct people's lives. His books werent really classified as "Children's Literature" but Oliver Twist and Christmas Carol became well known to children then and now -
Frankenstein
Frankenstein, is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a monster produced by scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twentyone. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France on august 11th 1823 in two volumes. Frankenstein achieved an almost immediate popular success and was known world wide. -
Mary had a little lamb
written May 24 1830 by Sarah Josepha Hale and was inspired by an actual incident. There is two theories on the origin of the poem, one says that another poet wrote the first four lines, and then Sarah wrote the the rest which was much less childlike then the first four. The other theory is that Sarah was responsible for the whole poem. -
Boys Books
Boy's Books of adventure in the 1800's were written specifically for boys arrived upon the book scene. The purpose of these books was to entertain while at the same time molding a boy's character. "Oliver Twist" written by Charles Dickens was a prime example of a boy's novel in 1837. -
Little Women
Louisa began writing adventure stories and fables at a young age and published what she could, earning little notice. It was not until she published her best seller little women in 1868 that she became to well known. The novel is based childhood experiences of the auther and her three sisters. It was writtenand set in the Alcott family home, Orchard house. The sisters names are Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March. The book was follwed by two sequels and the first 2,000 printings sold out very quickly. -

written in 1877 by the English children's literature author, Anna Sewelliy. was composed in the last few years of her life, during those years she remained in her house. it became a best seller immediatly, the author died five months after Black Beauty being published she got to see her first and only novel become a success.over fifty million copies sold. Black Beauty is one of the best selling books of all time. teaches children animal welfare, how to treat people with kindness and respect. -

Treasure Island Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, published May 23, 1883, narrated a tale of pirates and buried gold and was an adventure novel.It was considered a coming of age story. it was kinda unusual for children's literature then and even now but it is one of the most dramatized novels.the perception on pirates became soon enormous including treasure maps and pirates carrying parrots on their shoulders
