    He translated the Bible from Latin which allowed people to read and learn in their own language. Advocated establishing schools that would teach children how to read.
  • John Locke

    John Locke
    Developed the theory that children are shaped by their life experiences. He believe that before a child could be taught math or other curriculum they needed to be taught morals, values and virtues.He didn't believe that genetics played a role in learning he felt that children were born as blank slates and they absorbed information.
  • Freidrich Froebel 1837

    Freidrich Froebel 1837
    Freidrich Froebel created kindergarten in 1837 in Germany. He thought it was a good idea to have the children become socialized. He thought that children needed to be exposed to curriculum outside the house.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey
    He believed that in order for education to be effective, the content needs to be taught in a way that lets the student relate the information to experiences they have had previously.He advocated for an educational structure that could balance delivering knowledge while also taking into consideration the experiences of the student.

    Believed that children are "Little Scientists" and they develop their own intelligence. Believed that mental and physical activities are very important for cognitive development.He found four stages of mental growth and believed that the first three stages were based on actively exploring the environment.

    Categorized life into 8 stages with each representing a period in social development. He believed that how parents and teachers interact with and care for children helps to determine their cognitive and emotional development.

    Known for the Montessori method for educating children. Believes all knowledge comes from sensory experiences. Believed that respect for children is the foundation of teaching. She believed that education is a natural process that randomly showed up in young children.
  • Brown v. Board of education 1940-1955

    Brown v. Board of education 1940-1955
    This was a supreme court case that combined four different cases from different states in regards to segregation based on race. It argued that segregation violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This ruling allowed for schools to finally become combined where white people and African Americans can use the same facilities and everyone is offered the same education.

    The Soviet Union launched the worlds first satellite which sparked a fear nationwide of Soviet domination over the US. Congress passed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) of 1958. The act provided federal funding for education because the government felt that the best defense was a good educational defense.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    EAHC mandated that for the state to receive federal funds they need to implement policies that ensure a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for all kids with disabilities. This allowed children with disabilities to go to public schools. Teachers had to provide lesson plans that closely resembled those of the children without disabilities.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The purpose of this act was to hold the schools accountable for the outcome of the children. States were required to bring all children to the proficient level on state tests. It also required all teachers to be highly qualified which means they had to carry a bachelors degree in the subject they were teaching.
