Child Labor Makes a Goal
The National Child Labor Committee is formed with the goal of abolishing all child labor. -
New law created
Many US states enforced laws to restrict the emploment of young children in industries. But this had no effect on the rural communities as children were working in the farms, mills and factories. -
First State Child Labor Law
Massachusetts creates the first state child labor law requireing factory children under 15 to go to school a minimun of 3 months per year. -
Working Mens Party
This group proposed that child below the age of 14 be disallowed and banned from working in factories. -
Amrican Federationof Labor
The American Federation of Labor at thier first national convention calls for states to enact legislation barring children under 14 from wage labor. -
Juvenile Protective Association
Jane Addams found this program to advocate against racism, child labor, exploitation, child abuse, and child prostitution in Chicago and their effects on child development. -
"Children's Crusades"
Mother Jones organized the working children in the "Children's Crusades". This is a march from Pennsylvania to the home of Theodore Roosevelt in New York. They traveled with banners demanding that the children wanted time to play and they wanted to go to school. The president refused to meet with the marchers. The incident brought the issue of child loabor to the forefront of the public agenda. -
Constitutional Amendment
Congress adopts a constitutional amendment barring child labor and sends the amendment out to be ratified by the state legislaters. Later not enough states ratified the child labor amendment, therefore it did not become a law. -
The First Boycott
The first boycott ever was initiated by Walsh Haley Act, as per which the United States government refused to purchase goods, whcih were manufactured through child labor. The act reduced the working hours for children above 14 to 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. Health and safety procedures were reinforced. -
"Children For Hire"
The Associated Press publishes a series entitles "Children For Hire" on the continuing exploitationof children working in US agricuture.
