    From 1877-1878, Peirce published works in the popular science magazine 'Popular Science Monthly', discussing his theories of pragmatism. Here he posed that beliefs are essentially habits of action. He said you could use the sensible characteristics of objects and develop habits of actions using these objects. An example is if object X is harder than object Y, then X will scratch Y. Knowing this, we know that if we ever need to scratch Y we can use X, and if not then we can keep them seperate.
